Conference of the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms and the Committee on Education, Science, Culture and Sports on the occasion of marking International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust

Location: Blue Room

The Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms and the Committee on Education, Science, Culture and Sports are organising a conference on the occasion of marking 27 January - International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.

As a reminder, on 1 November 2005, the UN General Assembly adopted the Resolution establishing the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, deciding on 27 January - the day when in 1945 Auschwitz-Birkenau, the most infamous death camp of the enslaved Europe, was liberated. This Resolution of the UN General Assembly urged all member states to honour the memory of victims and encourage the development of educational programmes on the Holocaust history, thus showing resolve to help to prevent the crimes and their repeating in the future.

Respecting the initiative of the Jewish community of Montenegro and the conclusion of the Mixed Commission for following the implementation of the Agreement on regulating the common interest relations between the Government of Montenegro and the Jewish community of Montenegro on marking this significant date, the Committee on Human Rights and Freedoms and the Committee on Education, Science, Culture and Sports are organising this conference in order to contribute to raising awareness of the younger generations against the racist hatred, in addition to honouring the millions of innocent victims.

It was planned for the participants in this conference to join the campaign #WeRemember whose goal is to raise awareness on Holocaust and all types of xenophobia and genocide.

In addition to MPs, members of the two committees, President of the Parliament and members of the Collegium of the President of the Parliament, the following were invited to the event: representatives of the institution of the Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms of Montenegro, Ministry for Human and Minority Rights, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Federation of Associations of Veterans of the People's Liberation War in Yugoslavia, as well as the Rabbi of the Jewish community of Montenegro Mr Ari Edelkopf, the representatives of the Jewish community of Montenegro and the Embassy of Israel to Montenegro.
